Help Center - Word Definitions Dictionary Style
Definitions of the most common used words among the internet community

Asp (Active Server Pages) - Used in Web Design for creating dynamic content of a web page. Technically said it is a server side scripting language. It is mostly used on Windows platforms.

Bandwidth - The maximum amount of data that can travel a communications path in a given time. This is important because it determines the loading time of your website and how quick the data on each web page will load.

Banner - Typically a rectangular advertisement placed on a Web site either above, below or on the sides of the Web site's main content and is linked to the advertiser's own Web site. Also referred to as a banner ad.

Browser - Often called Web browser, it's a software application used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Database - A special way of organizing computer data its made of columns and rows for fast accessing data from any of the cells in the table. There are many different types of databases and are very useful for storing and organizing data. Often used for managing accounts, user information, etc.

DNS (Domain Name System) - This identifies each computer as a network point on the Internet using an internet protocol address systems to translate from domain name to IP and reverse.

Domain Name - A unique name that identifies one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name FlawlessWebDesign.com represents one IP address. Domain names are used in URL's to identify particular Web pages. Every web site that you visit is stored under domain name.

Domain Name Extension - Is the part after the dot in the domain name. The .com ending in FlawlessWebDesign.com is the domain extension. There are many other domain name extensions such as .com .net .org .info .biz .us .edu .uk .cc .co and many others.

Downloading - Is users accessing and save or "pulling down" data, software or other files to their computers from a remote computer, usually via modem.

Dynamic Webpage - Means there is a change in the interface using behaviors within a specific web page. This can be done in response to mouse or keyboard actions or at specified timing events. In this case the dynamic behavior occurs within the presentation.

E-Commerce - Means conducting business on the Internet. It is mostly referred to as buying and selling items online.

Encryption - Is coding the information in a file or e-mail message so that if it is intercepted by a third party as it travels over a network it cannot be read. Only the persons sending and receiving the information have the key to uncode the file and this makes it unreadable to anyone except those entities.

Flash - Is graphic animation technology owned by Macromedia Inc. Most browsers support Flash technology and usually is used as an introduction with movement like a movie to show a colorful demonstration.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) - Is one of the methods of transferring files over the Internet from one computer to another.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) - Is a bit-mapped graphics file used by the Internet. GIF different color & various resolutions, but is limited to 256 colors.

Homepage - It's the first page of a website. Referred to as the opening page.

Hosting - Is usually purchased through a company for the purpose of storing files that you upload to display content of a website.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) - Is the authoring and editing language used to create web pages on the World Wide Web.

Internet - Is the largest global network connecting millions of computers. It is based on something referred to as TCP/IP protocol for the communication between hosts and servers.

Intranet - Is a private network belonging to an organization, accessible only by the organization's members usually within a location. For example a library's computer used to lookup books.

IP Address - An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier for a specific point on a network. An IP address is a 32 bit number usually containing 4 decimal values, in the range 0 to 255. For example 66.46.105.9

Javascript - is a scripting language that allows dynamic behavior to be specified within HTML code. Most browsers support java however some are disabled for JavaScript use.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) - Uses compression for color images, therefore some details are lost in the process yet giving relatively good quality. It is widely used on the Internet. Also referred to as a JPG.

Link - Is an object on the web page that when a visitor clicks on that object then the user is taken to another web page where that link is pointed. Different types of links are: text links, graphic links, java links, form links and some other which aren't used often.

PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) - Is a server-side HTML embedded scripting language, used to create dynamic Web pages. Designed for Unix type platforms that some Windows platforms can also run.

Search Engine - Performs a search on documents for specified terms or phrases and returns a list of items where those terms were found. The most popular search engines today are Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and HotBot. However there are several thousands search engines and growing.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - Is the act of increasing the number of visitors to a particular Web site by adding appropriate keywords and phrases. The object is to make a website rank high in search engines. For general and competitive web sites it takes a lot of skill and time to tweak the web site in order to be well optimized.

Static Webpage - Is a webpage that always displays the same information in response to all requests from users. In all contexts, it provides the classical hypertext, where navigation is performed through static, non changing documents (webpages).

Submission Form - Are 'fields' for user inputted information. They are an excellent way of collecting and processing information from people as well as allowing them to interact with web pages. The output can be sent as an e-mail form, stored online, and/or returned to the user as an HTML page.

Thumbnail - A small version of a bigger image on a web page, usually containing a link to the full-size image.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) - Is a string that supplies the Internet an address of a resource on the World Wide Web, along with the protocol by which the resource is accessed. The most common URL type is http.

Video Clip - A short video sequence that can be embedded into a web page, usually down converted to slightly lower quality to save space.

Web Application - Is a programs designed to be used on the web site using a browser. Example of web application would be e-commerce web site, web banking, stock exchange on the web, web games and many others.

Web Designer - The person or people that designed your website's content. They are also referred to as a web admin.

Webpage - Is one of the pages on a website such as a homepage.

Website - Is a presence on the World Wide Web. Each website contains a home page (opening page), which is the first document users see when they enter a site.

WWW - Is a system of Internet servers that support specifically formatted documents. The documents are formatted in a script referred to as HTML that supports links to other documents. It also usually contains graphics, audio, video and other linkable files. This means you can jump from one document to another simply by clicking on hot spots.
